After experiencing relatively mild success with his previous releases, best-selling rapper, record mogul and self-made millionaire Master P brings us the third major release from his No Limit Films production company in the form of Lockdown, a gritty drama about the harsh life of prison. As usual, Master P is in front of the cameras, in addition to being given credit as executive producer this time. Mercifully, Master P didn't write Lockdown, which is a promising sign to anyone who has seen any of his previous writing efforts.

The story revolves around Avery, a man who had dropped out of college to support his girlfriend and child but is now on his way back to having a good life. After a very important and successful swim meet, Avery and his friends, Cashmere and Dre, go out to celebrate Avery's win when they are pulled over by the police and charged with murder. The three are falsely sent to prison when they are mistakenly found guilty and have to endure the injustice and hard life that comes with incarceration. The focus of the film is prison life and how prison is not a very nice place.

While the film focuses on something that is quite obvious, the hope is that it can bring something else to the table. The film is filled with young and unknown actors who will likely be given a very unique opportunity to shine in a lead role. Master P himself plays the most powerful leader of a prison gang who torments the three friends endlessly. Odds are that the character named Cashmere is on the painful end of an assault in the shower.

Originally premiering at the 2000 Toronto International Film Festival, Lockdown is set to receive a very limited release in a theatre or two. The Web site itself doesn't not have any dates officially listed, but is taking pre-orders for the DVD and VHS copies. (Walid Habboub/BOP)
