Screenwriters and directors Tom Hunsinger and Neil Hunter team up for their second feature film. This film can best be described as a British version of the movie The Big Chill.
The untimely death of the charismatic Stuart (David Coffey) brings together family and friends for the funeral. This gives everyone a chance to examine how Stuart's life has affected his or her life. The movie narrows down its focus to three male characters.
First, we have Dan (Bill Nighty), who is Stuart's brother-in-law. He is a faithful husband and father, but questions his stable life. He becomes enamored with Corinne (Clémentine Celarié), a flower lady. Second, Nick (Tom Hollander from Gosford Park), Stuart's boyfriend, begins to questions his sexuality when he ends up alone and meets the bubbly Charlie (Sukie Smith). The third and final person is Tim (Douglas Henshall), one of Stuart's oldest friends. He returns to town for the funeral and has to adapt to the sleepy town's slower pace.
This film has been shown at film festivals around the world and is now getting a theatrical release in the United States. Critics and audiences alike have praised it. It has also won many awards, including a Special Mention for Screenplay at the 2001 Locarno International Film Festival. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
