Just Married
Release Date:
January 10, 2003
Romantic comedies are generally a tough sell at the box office, particularly when they have no real bankable stars. Just Married looks to be no exception.
Ashton Kutcher (Dude, Where’s My Car?) and Brittany Murphy (8 Mile) star as a Tom and Sarah, a couple who get married against the wishes of friends and family members who believe they are just too young. Tom comes from a blue collar background and is now a sports announcer, while Sarah’s family is wealthy and snooty. After their wedding, the pair goes to Europe for what they hope will be the perfect honeymoon, but things soon turn hellish thanks to Sarah’s conspiring family and ex-boyfriend (played by Christian Kane, who was deliciously evil for a couple of seasons on the WB’s Angel).
Although Just Married has been fast-tracked for a quick release by the studio, it remains to be seen whether they will throw the necessary support behind the film. It’s a cute, if unoriginal, concept with an engaging cast; unfortunately, that wasn’t necessarily enough for recent rom-coms like The Sweetest Things and Life or Something Like It. Though there are certainly surprising breakouts in the genre (see: Meet the Parents, Miss Congeniality), they’re the exception rather than the rule, and almost always require a big-name star to drive the ticket sales.
