Andrea (Goodbye Lenin's Daniel Bruhl) is a handsome young man and a Polish-Jewish violinist. One day in 1936, he is heading for America on a ship, but is swept overboard by a mighty storm. After washing ashore at a closely-knit Cornish community, two spinster sisters, Ursula and Janet Widdington (Judi Dench and Maggie Smith) decide to take him in.
The ladies work to nurse the mysterious young man back to health, but his presence in their home comes to disrupt their previously peaceful lives. Not only does dark jealousy result, but political paranoia comes to the forefront and devastating heartbreak emerges. Ursula falls for the ladies' young protégé, and in the end, she must find a way to give him up.
Ladies in Lavender has a terrific cast and has so far received some outstanding reviews. It should be able to attract the same sort of crowd that loved Calendar Girls when it received limited release a couple of years ago. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
