Wil (Michelle Krusiec) is 28-years-old, and so dedicated to her job as a medical resident that her widowed mother, Ma (Joan Chen), finds herself wondering why her desirable daughter doesn't ever take any time for personal pursuits. Meanwhile, Ma has issues of her own, as she is mired in Chinese-American custom and very much under the influence of her strict, hard-line father. Their Flushing, Queens community is both gossipy and steeped in tradition, which means that every last detail of their lives is on display for the entire neighborhood to see.

One day, there is a social event in the old neighborhood, and Wil's mother insists that her daughter must attend to find a prospective husband. While there, Wil meets the gaze of a beautiful young woman named Vivian (Lynn Chen), and the instant attraction is undeniable. Soon, the two find their paths crossing in Manhattan, at which point Wil learns that Vivian's father is her boss at the hospital. Soon, the two are arranging to see each other as much as possible, with Wil stealing time away from work to see her new infatuation. They go on dates all over the city, but avoid Queens. Despite the fact that Wil is happy and content in her new relationship, she has never found the courage to tell her mother that she is a lesbian.

Wil is able to keep her secret for a period of time, but one night she returns to her Manhattan home and finds Ma on her doorstep. Shockingly, Ma is pregnant and unmarried, and has been tossed from the old neighborhood in disgrace after refusing to name the father. After taking her mother in, Wil must deal with the scary prospect of introducing her Ma and Vivian into one another's world. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
