Very blah for the most part. |
DreamWorks animation will follow up such stuff as the Shrek series, Shark Tale and Madagascar with this movie that is co-written by none other than Jerry Seinfeld. The comedian will also provide the primary voice in the film, which has other stellar stars such as Renee Zellweger (Shark Tale), Matthew Broderick (The Lion King), Patrick Warburton (The Emperor's New Groove), Uma Thurman, Oprah Winfrey, Robert Duvall and Eric Idle.
The CGI comedy centers on Barry B. Benson (Seinfeld). He's a bee who has just recently graduated from college, but he's having trouble reconciling the fact that he has only one career choice: making honey. He decides to take the brave and unusual step of journeying outside the hive, and while in New York City, finds himself in a little mortal danger. Fortunately, a kindly florist named Vanessa saves his life, and the pair become fast friends. However, as he gets to know Vanessa a little better, he discovers that humans actually are huge mass consumers of the honey that he and his brethren create. The angry Barry decides that he will sue the human race for stealing honey from the bees. Barry's litigious action leads to a lot of finger pointing between both the humans and the bees. Soon, our hero finds himself stuck in the middle and realizes that some of the problems that exist in the world will need his assistance to find a real solution.
So far, DreamWorks track record with CGI animation has been nothing short of stellar. Even with product that is average at best (Shark Tale), they've been able to use savvy marketing to convert their films into big box office results. Given Bee Movie's pedigree with regards to voice actors and the unique story line, early indications are that Bee Movie could continue in that same proud tradition. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
