The first half of Venom is lousy - Hardy isn't convincing as a reporter or boyfriend. It gets better when Venom takes the lead, but that doesn't save it. Worst Marvel movie in decade maybe. |
Venom, originally titled Backwater, is a movie based on a videogame. The catch is that the game hasn’t even been produced yet. It seems that back in 2003, Dimension liked the sound of the idea behind the game so much, they went ahead and grabbed the rights for a movie.
Kevin Williamson, the creator of Scream, is the producer on the film, with Jim Gillespie (I Know What You Did Last Summer) sitting in the director’s chair. The film stars Agnes Bruckner, Method Man, Bijou Phillips and Jonathan Jackson in a story that is described as voodoo horror set in the swamps of Louisiana. This group of teens find themselves forced to fight for their lives against a mysterious evil force known as Mr. Jangle.
At this point, there’s not much reason to believe that Venom is anything more than another horror flick in a heavily oversaturated genre market. With Williamson’s Cursed already crashing and burning earlier in 2005, this film will have to look fairly original and entertaining to lure jaded viewers to the box office. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
