This Asian horror film continues the burgeoning tradition of excellence in the genre, as Three Extremes has already gained quite a reputation in advance of its official release in North America. The movie is a cross-cultural trilogy and has three separate segments directed by some of East Asia's most fascinating filmmakers - Japan's Takashi Miike, Fruit Chan of Hong Kong, and Korea's Park Chan-Wook.
One of the segments sees a retired actress who is yearning to regain her lost beauty. To that end, she seeks out the rejuvenating benefits of some "special" dumplings that were created by a doctor. In the end, she realizes they contain a particularly horrifying ingredient. In the second portion, a movie director is kidnapped by a seeming stranger who is seeking vengeance. The helmer must make a terrible choice that will change the course of his life. And finally, we have the story of a lovely female novelist who is riddled with guilt over the death of her twin sister in childhood. A mysterious person sends her an invitation to meet at the place where her sister's tragedy occurred… (Kim Hollis/BOP)
