When Jonah: A VeggieTales movie was released in theaters in 2002, it was able to accrue an amazing $6.2 million in its opening weekend and $25.5 million at the domestic box office. Despite the fact that people believed these films would find their primary success on video, VeggieTales was able to earn back its $15 million budget even before those ancillary profits after theatrical release were added in.
And so it is that we'll be seeing the VeggieTales return in a new animated family film. The movie is based on a song that appears on the show, The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything. In that song, the Veggies talk about - well, how they basically do nothing. This is a group who stays home and hangs out, never traveling outside the comforts of their insular world.
How, you ask, is it possible for pirates to stay at home all the time? That's a valid question, for sure, but is certainly good news for those who have piratical ambitions but also have unfortunate issues with seasickness. Buccaneering can certainly reach new heights, and these Veggies are going to show us how. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
