I just couldn't stay interested in this one. |
If it seems as though it's been awhile since Francis Ford Coppola was behind the camera, there's a reason. The last film for which he was credited as director was The Rainmaker, which was a full decade ago. The five-time Academy Award winner has taken time to work as producer on a number of movies, including his daughter Sofia's The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette. He was also recently robbed, and lost a screenplay that he had been working on for some time.
His latest venture as a film director is Youth Without Youth, with a story adapted from a novella by Romanian author Mircea Eliade. The movie stars Tim Roth as Dominic Matei, a professor who finds his life profoundly changed by a major event that occurs in the years leading up to World War II. Matei is forced to become a fugitive, leading his pursuers through Romania, Switzerland and India.
Along with Roth, Youth Without Youth also stars Bruno Ganz (Downfall), Alexandra Maria Lara (Downfall), Marcel Iures and Alexandra Pirici. It's a small-scale release, but you can't ever count out a five-time Oscar winner when it comes to awards season. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
