The concept is there but isn't convincing in the process. |
Written and directed by Jake Paltrow, The Good Night features an absolutely stellar cast and will hope to capture the fancy of moviegoers during the approach of awards season. Featured players in the film include Gwyneth Paltrow (who is in fact the sister of the director), Penelope Cruz, Danny De Vito and Brit actors Martin Freeman, Simon Pegg and Michael Gambon.
The story follows Gary (Freeman), a formerly successful musician who is dealing with his waning career as well as a relationship with his girlfriend (Paltrow) that is going nowhere. Where once he was a big-time star, he is now working in the world of advertising, writing jingles for commercials. Meanwhile, his former band mate Paul (Pegg) seems to have everything going for him, which naturally causes no end of jealousy.
Still, Gary is able to find some form of respite in his dreams. There, he cultivates a relationship with a beautiful woman named Anna (Cruz). She is Gary's perfect match in every way - intellectually, artistically, sexually. The trouble is, he can only see her when he sleeps, which means that he is constantly trying to find ways to reach slumberland. He seeks out the assistance of a new-age guru (De Vito) to help him deal with his everyday problems so that he might find comfort in his real-world existence. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
