Most unintentionally funny moment: Daughter confesses to Mother that boyfriend beats her. Mother tells daughter to stop making him mad. This really happens. |
In 2005, Lionsgate Films was the supporting studio behind the surprise breakout hit Diary of a Mad Black Woman. The film opened to $21.9 million in its first three days, blowing away all expectations and eventually taking in $50.4 million domestically. The studio has proven to be masterful when it comes to cashing in on follow-ups to such surprise projects, and Diary of a Mad Black Woman is no exception. Almost a year to the day after the first film was released, a semi-sequel, will be unleashed in theaters.
Like Diary of a Mad Black Woman, the follow-up project is written by Tyler Perry. Titled Madea's Family Reunion, it continues the adventures of the southern matriarch Madea that were popularized in a stage production and Diary of a Mad Black Woman. This time around, in addition to writing the screenplay and playing the role of Madea, Perry also directs the film.
In Madea's Family Reunion, the heroine of the title has just been ordered by the court to take charge of a rebellious runaway named Nikki (Kiki Palmer). Adding to that trouble, Madea's nieces Lisa (Rochelle Aytes) and Vanessa (Lisa Arrindell Anderson) are having relationship problems. As she contends with these issues, Madea is also having to organize her family reunion. As the day of the big event draws nearer, secrets come to the surface and tensions run high. Madea has to strategize and plan in an effort to keep her family together and maintain some semblance of order. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
