Sure, this is a film for the under eight set, but who cares? It's a sweet, amiable movie for kids that I recommend for all new-ish parents. |
Space Chimps
Chiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimps iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin spaaaaaaaaaaaaace!
Okay, now that that's done, Space Chimps is a computer-animated film set to be released by 20th Century Fox on July 18th.
A multi-billion dollar NASA probe has disappeared somewhere in the depth of space. As the grandson (grandchimp?) of the first chimpanzee ever sent into space, Ham III (voice of Saturday Night Live cast member Andy Samberg) is chosen to help retrieve the craft. Ham's crew for his journey into space includes Luna (voice of Cheryl Hines, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Commander Titan (voice of Patrick Warburton, contractually obligated since 2003 to provide a voice for every animated project, ever). Other voices are provided by Stanley Tucci, Jeff Daniels, Kristin Chenoweth and Kenan Thompson.
Originally slated for May 2nd, Space Chimps was delayed thanks to last year's WGA strike, and its release was moved to July 18th, hopefully far enough removed from Pixar's WALL-E to avoid getting caught up in that tidal wave. Other than that, it looks fantastic (what CGI film doesn't nowadays?), and there are plenty of potential tie-ins. With proper marketing, Space Chimps can certainly find its target audience and become one of summer's solid surprises. (Tim Briody/BOP)
