Big Bad Love

This film had its World Premiere at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival as part of the Director's Fortnight section for first-time directors (Arliss Howard). It is also Debra Winger's first on-screen performance in more than five years.
The film is based on a collection of semi-autobiographical short stories by author Larry Brown. It follows Vietnam veteran Leon Barlow (Howard) through his many trials and tribulations. Here's just a sampling for you - getting out of rehab, a neurotic ex-wife (Winger), a daughter with an incurable disease, trying to get his writings published, and a mother who harps on him about how irresponsible he is. Will he be able to deal with all the ways he's being pulled in his life?
There have been some mixed reviews about the film. The acting and cinematography have been highly praised, but the writing and complex nature of the film have been areas of concern for some reviewers. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
