Wedding movies! Who can possibly get enough of them? Certainly not me! Well, it must be my lucky year, because 2008's millionth wedding movie is coming, and it's called The Accidental Husband.
The bride-to-be this time is The Bride herself, toe-fetish favorite Uma Thurman. Uma's got a problem, and I think it's one we can all relate to - while preparing to marry Colin Firth, she discovers she's already married to another guy! It seems that this disgruntled man hacked into a computer database and declared himself married to Uma, as an act of revenge after she offers some bad advice on her call-in show. This happened to me *twice* last year, so I feel Uma's pain. She must track down this other guy and get everything sorted out, and who knows? Maybe he won't be such a jerk after all. Possibly she'll be forced to reconsider her wedding plans. Who can say?
If there's anything interesting here, it's that Colin Firth is cast as the Baxter (the nice guy the girl is with before, say, Tom Hanks shows her what it means to be alive. Think Bill Pullman...). Firth is the ultimate crush for any woman who fell in love with BBC's Pride and Prejudice adaptation ( i.e. every woman). Having Mr. Darcy himself be the presumed jilted lover puts a lot of charisma pressure on the other guy, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who was apparently on Grey's Anatomy, and will be playing The Comedian in next year‘s The Watchmen.
Uma as leading lady is a little hit-and-miss. The Accidental Husband looks to be closest to The Truth About Cats and Dogs in tone, but there's no Janeane Garofalo around this time to keep things punchy. Uma is an unusual choice as rom-com star, because she's often so aloof in her roles. She frequently has that Madonna faux-Euro accent that doesn't exactly scream "comedy." She is very pretty though - no denying that.
The director is one-time actor Griffin Dunne. I'm a fan of his dark Meg Ryan/Matthew Broderick vehicle Addicted to Love, so I have some hope that he's able to pull off this frankly ridiculous premise. (Shane Jenkins/BOP)
