Maggie Gyllenhaal shows the rough edges, as well as the human side, to a woman that most people would regard as unredeemable. |

Maggie Gyllenhaal is better than the movie. |
Maggie Gyllenhaal is having a busy year, but this is the indie film anchoring tour-de-force performance that she is best known for. Gyllenhaal plays a young woman returning home after serving a three year prison sentence. She tries to rejoin her old life, most importantly being a mother to her now five-year-old daughter, but getting her life back on track - getting a job, dealing with parole, etc. - is a tall order. To complicate matters, her brother and sister-in-law have invested themselves in raising their niece in her absence.
It's the type of movie that rests squarely on a lead actress' shoulders, and there aren't many choices better than Gyllenhaal to give that challenge to. It's the type of performance that garners award buzz, but because the movie is so small it will most likely be Independent Spirit Award buzz. (Dan Krovich/BOP)
