Pointless action. At least Shoot Em Up was guilty fun. If they're going to use paintball splatter effects, I'd rather see a spoof about paintball. |
Django is a classic 1966 Italian film by Sergio Corbucci that is considered the definitive "spaghetti western." Sukiyaki Western: Django is a Japanese adaptation (though all dialogue is in English) of that film by director Takashi Miike. With sukiyaki being a type of noodle dish, you can see what they did there.
The storyline is apparently slightly different than the original Django, though it's your typical western setup of a lone gunman coming to the aid of a town held hostage by rival gangs. Expect plenty of references and homages to the genre, and yes, the main character (Hideaki Ito) will be carrying a casket at one point.
The cast is more or less a who's who of Japanese films, though no names are recognizable to any American viewer, with the lone exception of Quentin Tarantino, who plays a small but important role within it. We also imagine the scene is very violent.
Sukiyaki Western: Django will be getting released in North America later this summer through First Look International, after opening in its home country last September. (Tim Briody/BOP)
