Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light. Does advertising get any more pretentious than that? Nonetheless, there is simply no disputing the fact that is one of the most popular artists of our era. Seeking to capitalize upon the genteel, mainstream Americana, Parade Magazine type of recognition Kinkade has, Lionsgate has made a three picture deal with the artist to re-create aspects of his life as movies. Supernatural/Gilmore Girls star Jared Padalecki has been cast to portray Kinkade in all three movies.
The first cinematic adaptation will be based upon what Kinkade as described as a true Christmas miracle. The film will recount the story of how an older artist named Glen Wessler (played by acting legend Peter O’Toole) stepped in and helped lead a community into aiding Kinkade’s mother in saving her house. Along the way, Kinkade found a decisiveness he had previously lacked and discovered his voice as an artist.
Ignoring the cynical possibilities from a “learn the true meaning of Christmas” tale for a moment – rare for BOP, I know -, this is the type of story that is perfect for holiday release. Kinkade has tapped into the zeitgeist and is a cultural phenomenon. The idea of seeing the real life events that led to the creation of one of the most popular works of art in the world should prove to be a successful December release. (David Mumpower/BOP)
