A couple of great scenes by Hoffman don't make this the great film that critics are saying it is. Tomei is good and looks fantastic. |

Holy crap, do I hate this movie! Suffering, suffering, comical overacting, suffering, etc. |
Sidney Lumet is a five-time Academy Award nominee, but has never claimed an Oscar. He's teaming with Oscar winners Philip Seymour Hoffman and Marisa Tomei (as well as nominees Albert Finney and Ethan Hawke) for this suspense thriller that THINKFilm will hope to build as an under-the-radar awards contender.
Hoffman portrays Andy, a broker who is finding himself just a bit overextended (hard to imagine in today's financial climate, eh?). In an effort to raise some funds, he decides he will get his brother Hank (Hawke) involved in his criminal scheme. Their plan is to rob a small mom-and-pop jewelry store that appears to be an easy target. The catch? The owners are Andy and Hank's actual parents. As one might imagine, things go terribly awry when the robbery is attempted, and their father (Finney) sets out to find justice and revenge on the perpetrators.
As for Tomei, she portrays Andy's trophy wife, a woman who also happens to be having an affair with Hank. From the looks of things, it appears that Before the Devil Knows Your Dead will spin an intricate web and should be a stylish project at the very least. With the stellar cast, it does have a great chance as breaking out as more than a simple limited release. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
