Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?

Writer and director Tyler Perry hit it big in 2005. In that year, Lionsgate Films' Diary of a Mad Black Woman shocked box office trackers everywhere when it opened to $21,9 million. (Even Box Office Prophets pegged its first weekend at a meager $6.9 million). The film ended up earning just over $50 million. A year later, Perry wrote and directed Madea's Family Reunion, which opened even stronger at $30 million, on its way to $63.2 million. With $113.6 million in combined grosses against just $15 million in budget money, it’s no wonder Lionsgate wants more Perry.
This time it's Why Did I Get Married?, a film adaptation of Perry’s hit stage play of the same name. Though the film is without Madea, the hip southern matriarch character popularized in Perry’s stage plays and his first two big screen films, it still stands to make a lot of money.
In the movie, eight married friends share a week-long reunion in the mountains of Colorado. However, the annual tradition is broken apart when the couples come face-to-face with infidelity by one of the pairs, raising questions among the group over the strength of their own marriages. During the week, the couples struggle with issues of loyalty and treachery, and look for ways to move forward.
The principle cast of Why Did I Get Married? includes Perry and a pair of notable Grammy Award winners: two-time winner Jill Scott and five-timer Janet Jackson. Jackson, who plays a professor in the film, last played a character of the same profession alongside Eddie Murphy in Nutty Professor II: The Klumps in 2000. (Eric Hughes/BOP)
