A German film with English subtitles, Otomo is a fictionalized account of true events that happened in Stuttgart, Germany in 1989. In the actual story, a West African seeking asylum in the city assaulted a racist subway ticket-taker and became the subject of a city-wide manhunt. The film takes that story and examines the effects of institutionalized racism and police brutality as the main character, homeless and jobless, deals with intolerance and police brutality as an unfortunate chain of events leads to a final bloody result.
Otomo has been nominated for several awards, and won the Diversity in Spirit Award at the 2000 Vancouver International Film Festival. It will be opening on an extremely limited basis and is very unlikely to have any effect on overall box office. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
