In 2006, After Dark began a tradition that is now into its third year. After Dark Horrorfest: 8 Films to Die For is not a movie, but rather a festival of eight horror films that play in limited locations across North America. That first year, it was That first year, the festival made around $2.7 million in theaters before seeing its films go on to be released on DVD. When advertising the fest, advertising noted that the movies that would be shown were too graphic for standard release, so there was real appeal to strict horror buffs.
Horrorfest continued in 2007, though perhaps with less stellar results. Nonetheless, $875,000 in receipts is nothing to sneeze at when you're talking about strictly low-budget stuff that is simply trying to build some buzz prior to a DVD release. And clearly, the money (and buzz) was good enough that After Dark is continuing the tradition - though the "2008" edition is actually going to be in theaters in 2009.
Horrorfest III will feature eight brand new films for fans of the scary and gory to lay eyes upon. 2009's lineup includes The Broken, Slaughter, Perkins 14, Butterfly Effect: Revelation, From Within, Autopsy, Dying Breed and Voices.
As always, this will find a very niche audience, but will almost certainly satisfy After Dark Films. After Dark actually produced and is distributing Slaughter and Perkins 14, so they definitely have some confidence in the product. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
