Waking Up in Reno
Release Date:
October 25, 2002
Limited release
Mr. Angelina Jolie, AKA Billy Bob Thornton, co-stars with the lovely and talented Charlize Theron in the off-beat romantic comedy Wakin' Up in Reno. This R-rated road trip follows two couples from Arkansas ridin' to Reno, Nevada, to share the spectacle that is redneck nirvana: monster truck shows.
While most of Thornton's efforts, whether directing, writing, or acting, often receive deserved critical acclaim, his films leave much to be desired in terms of box-office receipts. Typically, modest screen counts are the rule, and should remain so for Thorton's historically limited-appeal projects. On a brighter note, the recent relative box-office success of O Brother, Where Art Thou? may provide a hopeful ray of light for extended run prospects for Reno, which otherwise looks to be available in stores for purchase sooner rather than later. For the second time in six months, this movie has been pulled off the schedule within days of its announced release. Stating the obvious here, Miramax doesn't think this title is marketable and they are struggling with how to handle its exhibition in theaters. Wakin' Up in Reno might well be a wonderful film but it has been on the shelf since its first scheduled release date in April, 2001. After that date, it has failed to see release in August of 2001 and now February of 2001. Danger, Will Robinson, danger. (David Mumpower/BOP)
