No Such Thing

Is this film a monster movie, a beauty-and-the-beast tale, or a harsh look at the media? Well, maybe it's a little bit of each. Director Hal Hartley brings us this look at society and sensationalistic journalism.
Robert John Burke portrays an immortal demonic monster who is fed up with human evolution and kills anyone who crosses his path. A news crew is sent to investigate the beast and promptly disappears. The fiancée of the group's cameraman (Sarah Polley) convinces her boss (Helen Mirren) to let her go to Iceland to find out what happened to her beau. She strikes up a relationship with the monster and decides to help him look for the scientist who has discovered a way to destroy matter. The beast thinks that the scientist can put him out of his misery of living on Earth.
This film was premiered in the Un Certain Regard portion of the 2001 Cannes Film Festival and is Hartley's third film presented at Cannes. Critics have given the film very mixed reviews. Unfortunately, most of them seem to be on the negative side. But don't let that stop you. Check out this film when it comes to your local independent film venue and decide for yourself.
