Seaside is set in a small coastal town in France, a popular vacation spot where the year-round inhabitants seem to be in a different world than the tourists who visit. Most seem content with their lives, but the beautiful Marie, who works at the local pebble-processing factory, watches the summer folk and dreams of having more. When her local beau cannot understand her longing to experience life outside their conscripted surroundings, Marie sets her sights on a recently-fired executive of her factory as her rescuer. Will she find the life of which she dreams? Will her designated Prince Charming turn out to be a frog after all? Or was Dorothy Gale right all along?

Seaside had its premiere at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, where the director won a Golden Camera. The film has appeared at several film festivals and played in various countries throughout Europe, and will now see a very limited run in New York beginning August 6, 2003. One would expect that if the initial critical and audience reaction is good that the film will be expanded into other cities, but then one can never tell what a distributor plans until at least the initial marketing campaign begins, and even then it’s not clear. Still, with good critical reaction and good word-of-mouth, an expansion could well be in the offing, and the film should strike a chord with fans of French cinema and finding-of-self romances.
