demonlover
Release Date:
September 19, 2003
Limited release
Contrary to what its title might suggest, Demonlover takes place in the world of Japanese anime pornography known as hentai. It centers on a rising female junior executive and her efforts to undercut her corporations main competitor and secure the rights to a revolutionary 3D manga technique. In the process, she becomes caught up in the illicit world of online pornography, endangering not only the negotiations but her position and possibly even her sanity.
This French film had its première at the 2002 Cannes film festival, and has been released in several European countries since. It is now seeing a limited release on these shores beginning September 12, 2003. Critical reaction to the film has so far been mixed, with the majority praising the film’s technique and underlying themes but finding the execution less than admirable. Given the subject matter, critical support is almost essential, and with reviews being lukewarm at best, Demonlover faces a long road to achieving even moderate success on the art-house circuit. This one will likely see a short stay in theatres before moving to the home video market, where it will still probably not appeal to much more than a narrow portion of the audience.
