Son of the Mask is to The Mask as George Walker Bush is to George Bush. |
Remember what happened when they did Dumb and Dumber without the original cast? Well, here we go again. This time it’s a second film in the Mask franchise. The studio definitely wants the viewing public to know this isn’t a sequel, but just another “Mask” story. Jim Carrey isn’t back, Cameron Diaz isn’t back, director Chuck Russell isn’t back, and the screenplay is being written by a group of rookies. As if all this wasn’t a bad sign, the main Mask character is a CGI baby (think Ally McBeal).
Jamie Kennedy plays Tim Avery, a cartoonist who isn’t looking forward to being a father. He has fatherhood thrust upon him when he’s left in charge of the baby and its superpowers. The challenge is made even more difficult when the real owner of the mask, the Norse mythological god Loki (Alan Cumming), wants it back.
Production is taking place at the end of 2003 in Australia and Los Angeles. The original plan was to make this a summer 2004 release, but New Line is now shooting for October 15, 2004. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
