When fairly judged as a harmless B-movie, it proves to be quite enjoyable. |

At least the soundtrack is good. |
As great as Bring It On was, there was room for improvement. Imagine if you will that instead of arguing the merits of Cheerocracy, the girls had taken it upon themselves to fight crime. Such is the precept behind D.E.B.S.
First time director and screenwriter Angela Robinson created a movie short in 2003 which explored that very concept. It was received so positively that she received the financial backing to try her hand at a full-length version of this concept. Finally, Robinson finds herself in even more rarefied air, because D.E.B.S. the full-length movie has been received so positively that Disney gave her the keys to their Herbie the Love Bug franchise re-launch. It has been quite the stratospheric rise for Robinson.
D.E.B.S. reveals an Alias-esque shrouded secret about the S.A.T. Apparently, in addition to deciding which high schoolers get their first choices as opposed to which ones get the dreaded Waiting List designation, the standardized test also reveals something else. A few questions combined together divine whether a girl is fit to be a Sydney Bristow-in-training.
Those women who are honored with this designation are sent to a training facility where they are taught how to be D.E.B.S. The crew is eventually faced off against the villainous Lucy in the Sky, a nefarious criminal overlord who has the audacity to kidnap one of the D.E.B.S.
The cast here couldn't be any more beautiful if we spotted them Helen of Troy. The Fast and the Furious alums Jordana Brewster and Devon Aoki join The Big Bounce-er Sara Foster, Meagan Good (You Got Served's Beautifull) and Kid Rock's kid sister Jill Ritchie, the lone returning D.E.B.S. from the film short. The president of the Academy will be played by the Kingpin himself, Michael Clarke Duncan.
D.E.B.S. has done quite well on the festival circuit. In addition to its Sundance reception earning Robinson a shot at Herbie the Love Bug, it won the received the Reader Jury of the Siegessule at the Berlin International Film Festival. (David Mumpower/BOP)
