I'll take a Doublemint commercial over an Olsen Twins movie any day of the week. |
America has watched the Olsen Twins almost from the day they were born. They have grown into a marketing machine. There are Mary-Kate and Ashley videos, games, and a very popular clothing and accessory line and the girls are consistently listed among the richest people in entertainment. (Ahhhhh, somewhere in the world, there's a TGI Fridays where Bob Sagat and Dave Coulier spend every night of the week trying to mooch cheap umbrella drinks off giddy nostalgic secretaries and then end the evening crying bitterly at the tattered wreckage of their showbiz dreams.) This will be only the second time they are the leads in a theatrical release; the other movie was It Takes Two in 1995.
The girls sneak off to New York City, each with a very different purpose in mind. Jane (Mary-Kate) is supposed to deliver a speech that will get her a scholarship to study overseas. Her sister Roxy (Ashley) is going to try and sneak into a music video shoot so that she can give her demo tape to a record label.
Things go awry when Jane’s planner is implicated in a black market transaction involving a powerful senator (Andrea Martin-voice of Mrs. Possible on the popular Kim Possible animated series) and the “dognapping” of her beloved pet. In very short order, both the police and their school’s truant officer (Eugene Levy) are hot on the girls’ trails. Andy Richter, hilarious former Conan O'Brien sidekick, plays a wacky limo driver/hitman. Jack "My 15 minutes are long over, yet here I stay, like a drunken party guest who refuses to leave even though the hosts have already put on their pajamas and started the dishwasher" Osbourne plays the manager of the band Roxy is trying to get in to see.
There are reports that the Olsens are hoping this film will lead to a new franchise of films with them in the starring roles. If their direct-to-video success is any indicator, we should see more from the twins in the future. So never let it be said that we didn't warn you. So, you, YES YOU!, gentle reader have the power to stop the Olson twin's gradual march towards complete world domination in its tracks. Don't go to this movie, don't let your preteen daughters or pervy, self deluding husbands go to this movie, and if you see this movie shambling towards your home, lock the door and blow its brains out with a shotgun before it eats your brains. (Marty Doskins and Jennifer Turnock/BOP)
