The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement
Release Date:
August 11, 2004
Much of the cast and crew from The Princess Diaries have been brought back for this sequel. Disney hopes they can create the magic once again. Notable among the returnees are director Garry Marshall, screenwriter Gina Wendkos, and cast members Anne Hathaway, Julie Andrews, Hector Elizondo, and Heather Matarazzo.
As you probably can guess, this film takes place in Genovia, the country where Mia (Hathaway) will be ruler someday. To get her through the transition from San Francisco high school student to Genovian royalty, she brings along her best friend Lilly (Matarazzo). Among the challenges Mia has to face, as a future monarch, is an arranged marriage she wants no part of - a tough prospect for a girl just out of high school.
The first movie had a big payoff for Disney. It made $108 million in box office revenue in the U.S. versus a $37 million budget. I’m sure Disney is keeping their fingers crossed for this one to just the same. I think bringing back so many critical pieces is definitely a step in the right direction. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
