Scary Movie 3
Release Date:
October 24, 2003
After grosses of $157 million and $71 million, Dimension will see if there's any life left in the spoof genre when the third film in the Scary Movie franchise hits theaters in October.
Unlike the first two, this one will be completely Wayans-free. Veteran spoof director David Zucker (most recently of BASEketball) will take the helm this time, with a script by approximately six people (uh-oh), including Kevin Smith.
Anna Faris will be reprising her role as Cindy Campbell, and the only other name signed right now is Charlie Sheen, most recently of that Visa commercial with his father. But with two Hot Shots! and two Major League movies under his belt, he's no stranger to spoofs or comedies.
2000's Scary Movie spoofed the teen horror craze. The sequel went after the various haunted house movies and Exorcist-type films. The plot this time around revolves around the fantasy genre, what with the releases of the Harry Potter films and Lord of the Rings trilogy. Of course there will be numerous other films spoofed, as well as jabs at other pop culture trends.
With the severe dropoff in box office from the first film to the second film, there may not be much to hope for with the third entry. But part of the first film's take was due to the trailer, which was one of the funniest in recent memory and one that the Scary Movie 2 couldn't possibly duplicate. And with some fresh input (none of the 37 writers on Scary Movie 3 were part of the 26 names that were on the Scary Movie 2 script), some fairly reliable comedy names in Zucker and Sheen and some good material to work with, Scary Movie 3 has a chance to surprise this fall.
