Almost immediately after the weekend estimates for Underworld were announced, Screen Gems was ready to move ahead with a sequel. The modestly budgeted film opened to strong business with numbers that far exceeded any reasonable expectations. With a $23 million budget and a $51 million domestic take, Underworld’s success, coupled with it’s open ended final few minutes, immediately warranted a sequel. Director Len Wiseman had won a franchise in addition to winning the heart of his leading lady Kate Beckinsale who, thanks to her kick-ass, leather-clad performance, became a household name. The couple looks to continue their run of success by putting together what will likely be a more ambitious, grander sequel.
The sequel will continue the story of the battle between the Death Dealers (vampires) and the Lycans (werewolves). This time around, the heroine Selene (Kate Beckinsale) will continue her relationship with forbidden love and lycan hybrid Michael (Scott Speedman) as they work together to try to uncover the hidden secrets of their bloodlines. Ultimately, the two warring factions will meet in a massive battle royale as the immortals find themselves facing retribution. (Walid Habboub/BOP)
