Physical slapstick comedies with a few heartfelt family moments thrown in for redemption are about as fresh a concept as a romantic comedy where the boy and girl end up together. Not since Cheaper by the Dozen 2 has a sequel been so little anticipated. On the other hand, Ice Cube has formed quite the fan base for himself with the Friday and Barbershop series, so maybe there’s hope for Are We There Yet? after all. Part of the "Are We" series that began with 2005’s Are We There Yet?, Nick Persons (Ice Cube) is back once again to live out every family’s horror situations. This time, instead of having to brave a summer roadtrip vacation, he and his new wife and kids (Nia Long, Aleisha Allen, Philip Daniel Bolden) are trying to fix up their new house in the quaint countryside. However, fixing up their new house soon turns into an adventure/catastrophe and they have to call in the help of contractor (John C. McGinley) who hurts more than he helps. It’s a new era and people are asking more out of their family comedies. Brainless popcorn flicks no longer make the cut; smart films such as Little Miss Sunshine do. Unless Are We Done Yet? offers more than the usual farcical fare, it might as well go straight to video. (Connie Lee/BOP)
