Before there was Harry Potter, England had another Potter who was its pride and joy. Beatrix Potter (Renee Zellweger), the author of such beloved children's books as The Tale of Peter Rabbit, might have been a joy for generations of children and parents, but she actually was a very private person. The story is set in Victorian and Edwardian England as Potter is developing her skills as a writer. The publication of her first book leads to celebrity, and also to a courtship with publisher Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor).

The problem with her love affair is that ultimately, the match was unacceptable to her family and Potter was forced to keep it a secret from society. Her family considered him to be from 'trade' and beneath her as far as her status was concerned. Eventually, they convince Beatrix to end her engagement to Warne, and she leaves London to take some time for personal reflection. Instead, she faces sadness and loneliness. When she returns to London, her beliefs and life outlook are entirely changed. She becomes a woman of great independence built a farming dynasty, and was a self-supporting landowner. Through it all, she never forgets her love for Warne. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
