The funniest film of 2007...and a deadly accurate portrayal of British country life |
3/214 |
Max Braden |
It takes itself more seriously than a spoof but counters the intensity of a cop mystery with some great tongue in cheek humor. Great third Act. |

If you like action movies, and you like to laugh, then you'd be hard-pressed not to enjoy this. |

Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright and Nick Frost have done it again. Action films get their just desserts in hilarious fashion. |

Another fantastic comedy from Wright, Pegg and Frost. Nothing but fun while still smart. More, please. |

Not enough funny. |
The names Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright and Nick Frost might not mean much to the mainstream moviegoer. For the staff at BOP, however, when we hear that these three men are attached to a project, we celebrate. We came to know and love their quirky blend of humor with the outstanding British comedy series Spaced, which is sadly still unavailable on DVD for North American audiences (it does occasionally air on BBC America, though!). The boys developed a bit more of a following stateside with the release of the marvelous zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead. One of the funniest movies of the last 15 years, Shaun of the Dead established Pegg and Wright as writers with a brilliant take on genre movies.
For their follow-up, Pegg and Wright collaborated on the screenplay for Hot Fuzz, a spoof of every over-the-top action film ever made. Wright directs the film, which has Pegg playing Nicholas Angel, a London cop who is so good at what he does, he puts other members of the force to shame. As a result, they ship him out to the idyllic and seemingly crime-free village of Sandford so that they won't be consistently having to live up to the high standards he sets.
When Angel arrives at Sandford, he is naturally disappointed by the basic levels of crime that are taking place. There is public intoxication, underage drinking, and not much else...until Angel begins to piece together that the rash of deaths that are occurring in the town are not accidental at all. He'll team up with the bumbling Danny Butterman (Frost) to try to bring the culprit down and make Sandford a safe, ideal town to live in and visit.
Look for the deconstruction of any number of action films throughout Hot Fuzz, including Bad Boys II, Point Break, Lethal Weapon and Die Hard. It's clear that Pegg and Wright have dutifully studied their source material and have put together a comedy that will be well-loved over time. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
