Believe it or not, Even Money is not yet another Texas Hold-Em-based movie. Hollywood has taken time out from running that concept into the ground in order to take on a much more unique concept: the casino lifestyle. Err, ignore the movie Casino in this example.
Even Money tells the story of a gambling addict named Carol (Alec Baldwin's former love and current mortal enemy, Kim Basinger) -- Gamblor to her friends -- who sees her addictive lifestyle intersecting with her home life. Her husband, Tom (go-to tough guy Ray Liotta), has begun to suspect how she spends her free time.
The struggle between Carol and Tom is not the only family argument caused by gambling in Even Money. Brothers Clyde (Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker) and Godfrey Snow (Nick Cannon) are trying to shake off a bookie who wants Clyde to pay his debt. Since Clyde does not have the money, Godfrey is asked to do something illegal that might ruin his future. The college basketball player is expected to shave points in a game a la Blue Chips in order to win the bookie back his money.
In addition to Basinger, Liotta, Whitaker and Cannon, Even Money also features several other admirable performers. Kelsey Grammer, Danny DeVito, Carla Gugino, and Jay Mohr are all featured players. Even Money is a dark drama about the addicttion of gambling that may not sound like much on paper, but with this cast, it could prove to be something special. (David Mumpower/BOP)
