Limited release
Ed Burns writes, directs and stars in this ensemble romantic comedy from Paramount Classics. The story takes us through the lives of six individuals, three men and three women, whose relationships become more and more entwined as the movie progresses. The film features a large cast, including Heather Graham, Rosario Dawson, Brittany Murphy and indie fave Stanley Tucci, and employs the “man in the street interview” gimmick throughout to comment on the nature of love.
The movie premiered back in April at the Los Angeles film festival and has been shuffled around on the release schedule a number of times. The most recent move from a September open to the current date came in September after the terrorist attacks in New York.
Sidewalks of New York is Burns’ fourth film where he takes on writing and directing duties in addition to starring, and the previous attempts have met with varying levels of success. His first such film, The Brothers McMullen, was a moderate independent hit, neither She’s the One nor No Looking Back ever saw wide release, though the former came close to matching the box office performance of his debut. Sidewalks in New York will similarly be a limited release with only a very minor impact. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
