No Evil Dead, but it'll do. |
A long time ago, before he was known as the guy who directed Spider-Man and its two sequels, Sam Raimi was known for a couple of little horror films. Perhaps you've heard of them. Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness are all considered cult classics and are generally listed among the best scary movies of all time. Since that time, he's produced a few television series (such as American Gothic, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and Xena: Warrior Princes) and had a few critically acclaimed films (Darkman, A Simple Plan, The Gift).
Since his involvement in Spider-Man, Raimi has returned to the world of horror by producing such movies as The Grudge (and its sequel), Boogeyman, The Messengers and 30 Days of Night. He'll return for real, though, as he has co-written and directs Drag Me to Hell, a horror flick that will send him back to his real roots.
Drag Me to Hell stars Alison Lohman as a young woman named Christine. Christine is a up-and-coming loan officer (is that possible in this economy?) who is living a good life. She has a charming boyfriend (Justin Long) and is looking to move up in the world of banking. One day, she is presented with a choice that will deeply impact the course of her life.
A mysterious woman named Mrs. Ganush comes into the bank and pleads with Christine to get an extension on her home loan. Christine is faced with making the human decision or choosing to deny the extension and impress her boss. When she denies the extension, Mrs. Ganush gets her revenge by cursing Christine, forcing her to live every day in a hellish existence. She gains the assistance of a psychic, but also must choose how far she is willing to go in order to rid herself of her curse.
It all sounds pretty darned good to us. Horror has gotten all too cliche lately, and the hope would be that Raimi might be able to breathe some life into a genre that relies far too heavily on gore and cheap scares. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
