I want to give Uwe Boll a hydrochloric acid enema. Doesn't the Geneva Convention prevent this movie's exhibition? |
Alone in the Dark is based on a video game series and focuses on a detective of the paranormal, Edward Camby. Camby’s latest case centers on a race of ancient demons that are planning a comeback in the 21st century, and only Camby and his ex-girlfriend, who also happens to be a genius with an astounding memory, can prevent the demons from taking over and destroying the human world. However, Camby has been preyed upon by an evil entity, and his mind is slowly slipping into madness, which he must stave off if he has any hopes of saving the world, and ultimately himself, from the powers of darkness.
Movies based on video games have had varying degrees of success. The key to bigger box office returns is to bring in a wider audience than just the core fan-base for the games, and at this early stage, it’s difficult to tell whether Alone in the Dark will succeed on that score. The premise is certainly intriguing, and movies based on video games with a more supernatural element have seen better box office returns. Still, much will depend on both the marketing campaign mounted by Artisan Entertainment and, even more importantly, word-of-mouth, which is always the foundation on which a horror film builds to hit status. More will become clear as a release date is set and the marketing begins, but if Alone in the Dark gets the good-and-scary buzz going for it, it could enjoy a nice, long life in the theatres before being reanimated in the home video market.
