Many sports superstars try to make sure they go out on top. We have heard them say, “I’d rather leave a year too soon, than a year too late.” However, even when you think you’re going out on top, things don’t always work out that way. This film is one of those cases.

Bernie Mac stars as an arrogant and cynical baseball player who wants to go out on top. He plans it so that he retires when he gets 3,000 hits exactly. He’s been living the good life away from the game for seven years when he finds out that three of his hits have been disqualified. That means he’s Mr. 2,997 if you’re keeping track.

He decides to go back to the game that he left behind to get those three hits. During this second stint in the major leagues, he finds a new love for the sport and begins imparting wisdom to young ballplayers and taking them under his wing. He also takes an interest in a lovely reporter (Angela Bassett) that’s covering this story for the media.

Though he is a veteran of the big screen, this is Bernie Mac’s first lead role in a film, which is surprising considering how well known he is. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
