Couldn't tell if it was supposed to be a comedy |
This movie is based on a novel by Scottish writer Alexander Trocchi. His work was inspired by the great Hollywood film noir offerings from the 1940s and 1950s. Quite a cast has been brought together for this production, including Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton.
The story follows a drifter named Joe (McGregor), who gets a job on the canals between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Les (Peter Mullan) and his wife Ella (Swinton) own the barge. One day as they are going about their business, they find the corpse of a woman floating in the water.
As the police continue their investigation into the event, it becomes apparent that Joe knows more than he is letting on. But we eventually get to learn more about his relationship with the deceased woman. He’s also getting a little chummy with Ella. Not smart to dip the pen in the company ink, especially with the owner’s wife.
This film had its world premiere at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival and won the Best Film category at the 2003 Edinburgh International Film Festival. Production was originally postponed nearly a year due to funding problems, but it was eventually completed in the spring of 2002. Sony Pictures Classics is the U.S. distributor for this movie and they’re looking for big things from the release. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
