I think it's safe to say that the Bond franchise for teens has been brutally slain. |
In March 2003, MGM had a mildly successful hit with the kiddie spy flick Agent Cody Banks. Keeping in mind that even modest sensations are high on the charts for the struggling studio, it wasn’t terribly surprising that a sequel was greenlighted in rather short order.
This time around, Frankie Muniz (who recently turned 18 in real life) returns as the eponymous spy kid. It seems a rogue CIA agent has stolen a top-secret mind control device, and it’s up to our young hero to journey to London to retrieve it. Much as he did in the first film, Cody has to pose as a student at a prestigious school to get closer to the suspects. He not only has to work on the case, but also balance his studies and keep his classmates from discovering his true identity, a mix that obviously makes for lots of laughs and wacky hijinks.
Neither Angie Harmon nor Hilary Duff could be bothered to return for a second helping of such fun, but they were apparently easily replaced. Anthony “I'll Take Any Part in Any Movie” Anderson will take on the role of Cody’s handler, while Duff will be replaced by a new “Banks Girl” – Hannah Spearritt, former S-Club singer-turned-actress. Filmed on essentially the same budget as the first film, expect Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London to have plenty more gadgets and fun-for-all-ages action. Additionally, since Anderson is onboard, expect the physical comedy to be ramped up substantially. Since the audience probably hasn’t expanded much since last year, a performance in the same neighborhood as the first film is probably about the best that can be expected. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
