Any movie that ends with Penelope Cruz in a bikini can't be all bad. Except this one. |
Paramount is planning to make this one of their big releases for 2005. The film is based upon the 1992 novel of the same name by Clive Cussler. This marks only the second time that a Clive Cussler novel is being made into a movie. The other film was the 1980 release Raise the Titanic.
The story is about Dirk Pitt, a "master explorer" who works for the National Underwater and Marine Agency, a government agency that works to protect all things water-related. He has to investigate the source of a strange epidemic that seems to be coming from a huge pollution problem. He has to take on a money-hungry billionaire from West Africa to find the solution.
Everyone's favorite horticulture enthusiast Matthew McConaughey stars as the swashbuckling Pitt. Penelope Cruz plays Dr. Eva Rojas, a Latina (so, far, so good) neurologist (Holy Denise Richards! That sound you just heard was Credibility slamming the door as he leaves the studio in disgust). There is no indication that she will be performing her role in her native Spanish, so we assume her character will be insipid and annoying, in keeping with all of her other English speaking roles to date.
Steve Zahn, a generally funny guy who's been in some generally unfunny movies, plays Al Giordino, the wisecracking sidekick. (Marty Doskins/Jennifer Turnock/BOP)
