Director Michael Cuesta again gets great peformances out of young actors. |
They were a quartet of kids who became fast friends. Leonard shopped in the husky section just like all the other members of the family. Malee was the only girl of the group, the only child of a mother who struggled to give and receive unadulterated love. The twins were the anchor of the group. Rudy was the all-American boy who excelled at everything. Jacob was the shrinking violet always left in the shadow of his brother.
On a tragic day, local punks from the other side of the tracks did something children are wont
to do. They destroyed something they were jealous was not their own. Jeff and Kenny were their names, and their crime was arson. They set fire to the clubhouse owned by the twins. Rudy jumped into the flame to protect that which he lied.
Rudy died that day.
12 and Holding is the story of how three closeknit friends learn to adapt to an easily avoided tragedy. They must cope with their feelings of guilt and remorse as they grow to accept that their friend/brother Rudy will never come home again.
Jacob in particular handles the situation in unexpected fashion. He attempts to befriend the boys who were directly responsible for the death of his twin. Meanwhile, Leonard deals with the fact that he lost his sense of taste in the fire by going on a diet...and forcing the rest of his family to join him in this pursuit. And Malee attempts to get know her mother by reaching out to one of the woman's patients, Gus. Eventually, she even comes to talk to her mother about the woman's shortcomings as a parent.
