This latest Dark Castle production tells the tale of a woman who debunks myths for a living. She’s called to a so-called “God-fearing” small town in Texas to investigate stories of supernatural occurrences in the area, events that resemble the Biblical Ten Plagues of Egypt.
Dark Castle has had quite a run since its inception. Formed in 1999 by Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis, in partnership with Castle’s daughter Terry, its mission statement was to remake and update the films of Schlockmeister William Castle, as well as create original projects. The remakes of Castle’s films have been largely successful, but Dark Castle’s first original film, Gothika, met with a lukewarm reception, and the fact that it too featured an Oscar-winning actress in the lead does cause a bit of concern for this original outing. But horror may well rival comedy as a notoriously difficult genre in which to find success, as what scares us is nearly as individual as what makes us laugh, and one man’s soul-searing terrorfest is another man’s cavalcade of yawns. Dark Castle has demonstrated it can bring the scare, and with all the talk in recent months about faith and the end of days and whatnot, certainly the subject matter is on the public mind.
