It is every mother's nightmare: the fear of being unable to protect and provide for her child. Situations like this can be even worse. Imagine, if you will, that the father of your daughter is a fan of spousal abuse. You can't even defend yourself, much less your little girl. Who, then, would be the last person you would want to have to turn to? How about the father of the monster who beats you?
Such is the story of An Unfinished Life. The main character (played by Gigli survivor Jennifer Lopez) is left with only one option in life. She must pack up her daughter and all of their belongings. Their destination is the Wyoming farm residence of her estranged father-in-law (played by living legend Robert Redford), a man who isn't completely convinced his son is such a bad guy.
The situation grows even trickier as the mother finds herself attracted to a local (Josh Lucas, the redneck from Sweet Home Alabama) despite her father-in-law's disapproval. She must learn to rebuild familial fences while taking the time to find the happiness life has yet to afford her.
An Unfinished Life is something of an emotional successor to the 1998 Sandra Bullock flick, Hope Floats or even a Murphy's Romance update sans the May/December romance. The concept of having to rebuild one's life from the ground floor up while managing to succeed as a mother and find true love clearly designates this movie as a chick flick. And a good-looking one at that. (David Mumpower/BOP)
