Director and screenwriter Alan Brown makes his feature film debut with this work that takes an interesting look at marriage and relationships. What happens when a couple tries to improve their marriage by befriending an underprivileged boy? Will it bring them together or tear them apart?
Elaine (Frances O'Connor) and David (Simon Baker) are a nice, attractive married couple. They are still in love with each other, but have reached that point in their relationship where they are content (a.k.a. boring). They go into a local ice cream shop where they meet Chet (Gregory Smith). He's a 15-year-old local high school student that works part-time dishing out the desserts. Elaine has told David that she's not ready to have kids, but Chet changes her mind and she's ready to have him.
Somehow Elaine talks David into befriending the boy and taking him along on their outings and vacations. As you probably guessed by now, Elaine sleeps with Chet (yes, that's statutory rape) and her marriage starts spiraling downward. Anyone surprised? I didn't think so.
The film had its world premiere at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and has had its share of negative criticism since then. It's not just about the story, but the film itself. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
