Despite being only 19-years-old, Scarlett Johansson is demonstrating industry savvy that would be impressive for a woman twice her age. Johannson previously leveraged the critical acclaim she received in Ghost World to attain parts in the B-movie celebration Eight Legged Freaks and the Oscar bait efforts that made her a household name, Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring.
After becoming a breakout star thanks in large part to her Bill Murray semi-romance, Johansson is now using her recently acquired stroke to greenlight productions. The first such example is Napoleon and Betty, a project that she and writer Rebecca B. Kennedy personally pitched to Lions Gate.
The movie will tell the story of a post-Waterloo Napoleon Bonaparte. The would-be world conqueror is left to sulk at Saint Helena and fantasize about what might have been. During his period of exile during his last few years of life, Bonaparte will befriend a British girl whom he implores to aid him in escaping and regaining his empire. In the end, the doomed emperor comes to accept his fate and recognize he is fated to die in exile on the island. The story will be told from the perspective of Johannson's character, the young girl, rather than through Napoleon's eyes. (David Mumpower/BOP)
