Another in the recent spate of instantly disposable horror flicks. |
The next time your radio or television station turns fuzzy and full of static, you might not want to turn it off. According to the premise of the Michael Keaton movie White Noise, it might mean someone's trying to get in touch with you.
The phrase "white noise" itself refers to EVP (Electric Voice Phenomena), an abnormality that is frequently researched by genuine ghost hunters. Discovered by Dr. Konstantin Raudive, a Latvian psychologist who was a student of Carl Jung, such EVPs occur when spirit voices are captured on audiotape. Though such voices are inaudible when they occur in real time, it is possible to hear them on playback levels in a range from 0-300 Hz (live human voice has never been recorded below 300 Hz). Dr. Raudive captured tens of thousands of spirit voices on audiotape, all under very strict laboratory conditions, not to mention the assistance of a physicist and an expert in electronics.
In the film, the white noise in question is coming from the voice of the Keaton character's murdered wife. Is she a kind ghost or an angry ghost? And will she help the people she left behind solve the mystery of her death?
The concept behind the story sounds suspiciously like the 2002 Kevin Costner thriller, Dragonfly. That script was once known as the best unfilmed screenplay in Hollywood, but ended up spawning a film that was among the worst of its calendar year. Still, though the premise might be a bit of a flimsy retread, it'll be great to see Keaton back on the big screen. He's a terrific actor whose abilities to do drama/thrillers well are highly underrated. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
Official Synopsis
MICHAEL KEATON plays a successful architect Jonathan Rivers, whose peaceful existence is shattered by the unexplained disappearance and death of his wife, Anna (CHANDRA WEST). Jonathan is eventually contacted by a man (IAN MCNIECE), who claims to be receiving messages from Anna through EVP, the process through which the dead communicate with the living through household recording devices. These extraordinary recordings, captured by people all over the world, seem to confirm what many of us have dared to believe: it is possible for the dead to communicate with us. At first skeptical, Jonathan then becomes convinced of the messages' validity, and is soon obsessed with trying to contact her on his own. His further explorations into EVP and the accompanying supernatural messages unwittingly open a door to another world, allowing something uninvited into his life.
