Perfect Creature

At some point between the release of Blade and Blade II, some shadowy organization in Hollywood determined that there should be a quota for vampire movies each year. Perfect Creature is the 2005 answer to Underworld and Blade: Trinity.
Okay, the projects actually have nothing to do with each other, but still. Doesn't it feel like the only three options currently available for a horror film are to re-make a classic, to battle the undead or to face horror icons off against one another?
Perfect Creature is not without some novelty, though. This production is an alternate timeline period piece set in the racially charged 1960s. The story involves a new take on the original myth of how vampires came into existence, hopefully doing a better job than Dracula 2000 did with that disastrous Judas Iscariot concept.
The central characters of the movie are protagonist Silus, his girlfriend Lilly, and the couple's mortal enemy, Edgar. Dougray Scott, the unfortunate soul who missed the opportunity to portray Wolverine in order to shoot Mission: Impossible 2, will play the lead. Saffron Burrows, currently learning a thing or two about vampires in Van Helsing, is Lilly. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, last seen winning hearts worldwide in Bend It Like Beckham, will play the heel character of Edgar. This is not his first exploration into the mystical and weird either, as he frontlined the BBC mini-series production of Gormenghast long before anyone in North America had a clue who he was.
The underlying themes of Perfect Creature are professed to be "race, serial killings and the capacity of human beings to hope". While we at BOP tip our caps to the production crew for reaching for the stars, we'll be happy if the movie settles for being intense. The last couple of years have been sensational for action horror, and we would hate to see the streak end. (David Mumpower/BOP)
